I know what you’re thinking – Paleo and Desserts go together about as well as oil and water, men and asking for directions, bad breath and a hot date…
But let’s think about it – there is a reason (in my opinion) we have a “sweet tooth” – evolutionary theory believes the enjoyment of sweet foods gave us an indicator that a food was okay to be eaten. Fruit especially would have been desirous and when available our prehistoric ancestors would have enjoyed them in abundance. Honey, our first natural sweetener was probably enjoyed when available also.
Now today we go overboard – we combine the unnatural sweeteners with insulin spiking starchy carbs, and get fat. But that is a result of the combinations of the foods we’re eating. Since starting the 4HB diet and subsequently moving over to Paleo – I’ve often felt like there is this notion that if it’s “sweet” it must not be good.
Well, I think that notion is wrong. And apparently one of the bigger Paleo Cookbook sites out there is in agreement.
Nikki from the Paleo Cookbooks website recently released “Paleo Sweets“
I see this as a sort of Paleo Desserts book – perfect for a paleo treat or non-cheat day “cheat”. Hell, it’s probably perfect for Cheat day cheats when you don’t want to go overboard.
Aren’t you just taking crap food and paleo-ifying them?
That’s the tact that Melissa and Dallas at Whole30 tend to take. While I love their site and their information on Paleo and healthy living – I disagree with their ideas that we can’t take the foods we’ve grown up with and loved and make them healthy.
To me that is what Paleo Sweets is doing.
These are recipes that will satisfy some of your cravings and still keep you eating healthy, primarily whole foods. Plus, if you have little ones (Like me) that you are trying (unsuccessfully) to ween off a Conventional Western Diet – then this can help make the transition easier – giving them and yourself some delicious, healthy treats.
What Kind of Paleo Desserts are in here?
Nikki has created recipes for:
- Protein bars (which remind me somewhat like protein infused versions of my
Homemade Larabars)
- Nut butters – healthy fats, delicious flavors, and wonderful textures
- Biscuits – perfect with a morning cup o’ joe (black of course)
- Cakes – paleo style cakes for those special celebrations
- Jelly and Mousse – you didn’t think these could be paleo did you?
- Ice creams – it’s hot as HE** where I live right now and a healthy cool down treat is what I need!
- Fruit salads – the original paleo dessert
If you are looking to add some variety to your diet – I would recommend you check out Nikki’s Paleo Sweets cookbook.
If you’d like to see a sample of a type of Paleo Sweets you might find in the cookbook – check out this recipe for Paleo Brownies that Nikki has allowed me to post here
If you like this let us know about it in the comments – I personally enjoy a healthy treat now and then and this definitely satisfies my sweet tooth!
